AGGIE

The AGGIE gas-filled separator is used to purify fusion-evaporation products from unreacted beam and can be used for both chemical and physical experiments.  The gas-filled separation technique causes these products to enter a narrowly defined charge state distribution which also has a narrow magnetic rigidity distribution.  This gives maximum efficiency for the collection of rare products.  Three magnets in a DvQhDv configuration focus the ions toward a focal plane consisting of two DSSD detectors.  A multi-wire avalanche counter is being developed to discriminate implanting ions from radioactive decays.  The focal plane array can also be removed and replaced with a “simplified recoil transfer chamber” for collecting ions for chemical experiments.
