Si Detector Frames
The silicon detector frames were designed and constructed at Cyclotron Institute at Texas A&M University. The newest (2018) autocad drawing is here and the here.
Instructions for assembling frames:
Equipment:
- PCB frame components
- Frame parts:
- Top
- Right
- Left
- Bottom board with connections
- Bottom board with only back connector
- Ring 2/3, 4/5, 6/7 were ordered and optimized in 2018 by Kris Hagel, Bob Olsen and Andrea Jedele
- Components ordered in 2018 are purple and in the NIMROD lab
- Pins to mount Di detecctor (in NIMROD lab-also in electronics shop)
- Frame jigs
- Jigs exist for all rings (2/3, 4/5, 6/7 and 8/9)
- Parts:
- Main Holder
- Width and length are dimensions of Si
- Bar segments with screw holes
- Screws
- Motivation for this design:
- Board thicknesses are not uniform from manufacturer
- Makes sure the inner dimensions are always the same regradless of manufacturer flaws
- Aluminum "Si detector" jigs
- Fit into NIMROD frames
- Exist for all rings
- Cotton swabs
- Ethanol
- Solder Resin
- Solder Materials
Assembling instructions:
- Clean all solder joints with ethanol and resin using cotton swabs
- Put screw partially into frame jig
- Place frame components into jig with ledge facing inward and up. Tighten screws until components sit snuggly
- There's a ridge on the side of the jig
- Frame components should sit on that ridge - this ensures proper height alignment
- Solder grounding joints in each corner
- Before soldering joints, make sure height of the components are aligned
- Solder even ring signals on the bottom of the bottom and left/right frame component
- Can also be done after frame removed
- Remove frame from jig
- Frames sits snuggly - need to remove slowly and cautiously
- Place bottom segment such that the pin holes align
- The bottom wire bond connection on both segments can be used to reference how the components fit togetther
- Insert pins with the narrow end facing the inside of the frame
- Place frame on table with bottom side facing up
- Use tape to hold pins in place
- Flip frames over and solder pins
- Exert a small amount of pressure (push down lightly on frames) to ensure pins stay all the way in
- Remove tape and use wire cutters to clip pins
- Check electronical connections
