Several safety features are incorporated into the design of the Radiation Effects Facility. The experimental area has been surveyed for radiation levels and certified to be safe for beam intensity levels of several orders of magnitude greater than needed for typical experiments. the beam radiation area and the data room are seperated by high density roof planks to insure safety. An interlocked door, a motion sensor and a surveillance camera are installed to insure that personnel are not in the beam radiation area while the beam is present. The door, motion sensor and a radiation monitoring system are interlocked directly to the cyclotron, stopping the ion beams if any should trip. Every component of the interlock system is tested before the start of each run and re-tested at least once in every 72-hour period. First time users to our facility are required to take a brief safety tour before receiving a dosimeter. Users of our facility are required to wear dosimeters at all times while in Cyclotron Institute building.
