An introduction to particle production in high energy nuclear collisions
Abstract:
After a brief introduction to perturbative QCD (pQCD), I discuss the applications of pQCD to particle production in proton-proton collisions. I then consider high energy nuclear collisions and argue that one needs to generalize pQCD to include nuclear effects in the initial state of the nuclei. I then introduce the Color Glass Condensate formalism and apply it to particle production in deuteron-gold collisions at RHIC and discuss the implications for the upcoming heavy ion collisions at LHC.
